What an enthralling evening under the #delhi rainy skies it has been today...as we sat with the team of #8bythelotus, our 'Cultural Baithak' location partners, planning our next #heritage or #mythology or #poetry #baithak...
But after perhaps almost 3 hrs, it dawned on us, that we have actually hardly spoken about work and instead marvelled at the cloud-infused #Dilli horizons...our reverie broken by clicking pics & wolfing down crisp-hot pakodas served with chutneys & washed down by few large mugs of cold coffee (getting distracted by food is OK, coz after all an unique menu is also being planned for our event!!😂 )

अकबर इलाहबादी की एक चिठ्ठी याद आ रही हैं...मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब की तरह अकबर इलाहाबादी को भी आम बहुत पसंद थे l अपने एक दोस्त मुंशी निसार हुसैन के नाम ख़त में जिसमें आम के season में आम भेजने की दरख़्वास्त कर ते हुए लिखते है....
"नामा न कोई यार का पैग़ाम भेजिए,
इस फ़स्ल में जो भेजिए बस आम भेजिए
ऐसा ज़रूर हो कि उन्हें रख के खा सकूँ,

A Mumbaikar's Ode to Delhi...today we end the Sheher-o-Shayari series on #Dilli, a poetic retelling of Delhi's 8 cities, which was curates by our guest & DBFwalla, Prerak Vyas. A writer, creative artist & co-founder of "Parwaz," one of the most prolific collective of poetry enthusiasts and budding poets of India, Prerak has been sharing his own feelings and thoughts on how he has seen, felt, experienced and imagined Delhi.

A Mumbaikar who loves Delhi madly, @prerakvyas6 puts down one last ode to the city, which as he says, is his 'mehbooba'!
His poems written over a period of almost a decade and a half of frequent work-related visits to our city we have presented to you over the last 8 days...hope you enjoyed it as much as we did while working on this!

New Delhi, the 8th and recent-most city laid out by the English, work on which began almost 110 years back, has been pretty much the way the Brits envisioned it, untill now! But that's a different story, and though today our guest curator @prerakvyas6 in his penultimate poetry-post, almost pens down a lament on how the New Delhi we have known for last 100 yrs is changing, rapidly, but today we simply celebrate the beauty of a simple era, when New Delhi was ours and the "India Gate-Rajpath-Janpath" area was where Dilliwallas congregated in largest numbers in Delhi.
Eager to leave behind the Mughal legacy in architecture, the English-India Govt, back in 1911, planned to incorporate many new elements to differentiate their new capital from any of the erstwhile capital cities of Delhi/India.
A central avenue comprising a tree-lined road running East-West in axis, water-pools on both sides of this road, it was called the Kingsway, now Rajpath, was planned. The two ends of this avenue, were marked by two spectacular architectural delights; boasting on the west-end atop the Raisina Hill, the biggest residential palace of that time in the world and the secretariat bldgs, where the Viceroy lived and his team governed/ruled india on behalf of the English Govt. On the east-end of the central axis road was the War Memorial, which we today know as India Gate. The rest of the city stretched in the north side from Connaught Place & New Delhi Railway station and on the southern end the city limits were till the Lodhi Colony & Willingdon Airport (now Safdarjang Airport).
Using a connected grid of hexagonal roundabouts the rest of the city came up within these boundaries, so to say. And that's how it has been, till now!

Shahjahanabad, the Mughal imperial capital, built by, who else, but Shahjahan, is a fav of us Dilliwallas...after all what is Old Delhi if not synonymous for Shopping, Food, Architecture and the Maddening Crowds!!
This 7th city of #Dilli, laid out along the river Yamuna, was completed in mid 17th Century and has borne the brunt of many a invasion, both from foreign powers like Persia & Afghanistan as well as within India, by the Sikhs, Marathas, Jats, British East India Company and the carnage of partition in 1947. And each invasion and upheaval has made it lose lots, yet made our city gain in some small measure!

The site of the 6th medieval capital city of Delhi, "Dinpanah", built by the 2nd Mughal Humayun, again like Ferozabad (which we featured ystrdy), was right next to the River Yamuna.
Started by Humayun in early 16th C and then taken over & finished by the Sur Dynasty who ruled northern India for almost 16 yrs from here, this citadel-fort palace is popular today as "Old Fort" (Purana Quilla), thanks to the British administrators who named it thus.
The citadel, complete with its own moat had been almost in ruins, except for two well-preserved (thankfully!!!) monuments; the most beautiful 'Quila-e-Kohna Mosque', which perhaps boasts the most exquisite stone-inlay work in Delhi and the library/personal room of the emperors, the two-storey structure 'Sher Mandal'.
Interestingly the Purana Quilla site is REALLY OLD! Excavations have revealed a continuous set of brickwork & pottery from a period starting 3000 yrs back! Seems the Brits prophetically got this name for the fort right!
