Monsoon Magic in Delhi

These weeks of July & Aug we bring you our city’s many monsoony flavours!

Thundering Tughlaqabad:
The Cursed Fort & Its Forgotten Tales

Delhi’s ‘Cursed Fort’ lies forgotten, almost a silent, massive sentinel on the South-western approach road to Delhi, mute spectators to the rise & fall of empires for the past 700 years.

Yes!!! Delhi has a fort which has been standing guard for the past nearly 700 yrs…but which was never completely lived in because of a powerful ‘curse’ that consigned its fate forever to ruins…!

In these few weeks of rains in Delhi, whatever our city receives, join Ramit Mitra our founder, in the Best #OpenAir #MonsoonHangout in #Delhi…..the green expanses are wild…the city’s Heritage monuments are all washed clean by the rains…and this is the best time to experience Delhi’s largest & most mysterious fort complex, which offers both the “Jungleee Greens” as also the “Washed Monuments” and their hidden tales…tales of a fort which seems to have been frozen in the pages of time since the 14th Century!

Walk, become a child as you run up & down ramps where once richly caparisoned elephant climbed with their Sultans & Princes, jump or crawl all over the fort walls, palace ruins, wild greens in the Tughlaqabad Fort ruins and maybe even get wet in the rains….this Sunday morning, topped up by a typical Desi Baarishon Ke liye Perfect Nashtaa !!!
ARE YOU GAME??!!!

A good opportunity for families with children, photographers and nature lovers.

In case of any queries please call us @9871181775

Monsoon Mehfil in Mughaliya Mehrauli”

The rain gods have finally smiled on Delhi….and DBF adds to the thunder with a unique walk in the lanes of one of the oldest cities of the world this Sunday exploring history, cultural society and poetry during the last few decades of Mughal history.

If the reign of a Mughal had to mark the beginning of the end of the Mughal Empire, it would perhaps be Shah Alam II. The saying attributed to his dominion ‘Sultanat-e-Shah Alam, az Dilli ta Palam’ captures this moment only too poignantly. But like in the case of many other empires in the dawn of their power, it was this period, as the sun set on the “Mughaliya Hukumat”, which saw a burst of cultural efflorescence.

And it was Mehrauli, located on Aravallis, a darling of not just the Mughals, but for centuries before and even after during the British…where Mughal humanism, a syncretic culture and traditions of spirituality was reasserted; amongst the dense forests that dotted the highlands of Mehrauli, in this ‘Monsoon Retreat’ of the Last Mughals…

So join us on Saturday evening at Mehrauli Village, for a historical walk, whose stories are strung on verses of poetry….explore the Naqar Khana of Zafar’s palace, a special chamber known for its superior acoustics and walk through love, longing and desire in the Mughal court through the verses composed by emperor Shah Alam and the last Mughal emperor Bahadhur Shah Zafar. We finally end in the holy courtyard of Dargah-e-Bakhtiyar Kaki, for a dose of Sufi spirituality and qawwali music.

ABOUT THE WALK FACILITATORS
The walk is in collaboration with our long time partner Parwaz – परवाज़ a group renowned for their poetry baithaks and interactive events on literary themes. Priyanka Bhaskar from Parwaz would be presenting Zafar in her unique captivating style. Shah Alam will come alive with Riya Sarkar an architect by training who enjoys leading heritage walks in the city.

The story-telling sessions will be done in English/Urdu/Hindi.

Monsoon Magic in Mandu-Maheswar, MP

The month of Aug we bring you our culture & history-heavy innovation as we explore other parts of India on our 15th Aug Wknd Trip to Madhya Pradesh!

मेघ, मल्हार और माण्डू – A mesmerising mystical and musical sojourn!

“Once upon a time somewhere in central India, a dark cloud came to rest on the mountain peak which looked like an elephant kneeling down by a river bank. At the sight of this majestic cloud, a yaksha felt a surge of hope. ‘Why don’t I send a message to my beloved through this northward-bound cloud’, he wondered, and approached the cloud with an offering of flowers.

‘O mighty cloud capable of carrying immense quantities of water, O noble relative of Pushkara (which in the Hindu mythology is the cloud associated with the Deluge-Pralaya – the great flood that submerges the universe at the end of every cycle of four eras), KamarUpa (one who can assume any form), ‘MaghOnaha prakrti puruSHam, oh Indra the dispenser of rain, take a message from me to my wife.’”

The scorching heat of May and June melts away with the first showers of rain, and the entire earth seems to sing to the tune of nature. The months of ‘Aashadh’ and ‘Saawan’ brings a whole new season of celebrations in Indian culture. There is no parallel in the world to the celebration of rains in India – festivals, feasts, songs, and needless to say that it has inspired numerous poets and writers, with rains and clouds forming the backdrop to Kalidas’s Meghdoot way back in the 5th Century…

School textbooks invoke the volcanic-origin of the Malwa Plateau of west-central India which lies to the north of the Vindhya mountain ranges. To visit cities like the industrial hub of Indore and Dhar, and spiritual centres like Ujjain and Dewas is barely scratching the surface of Malwa and its historical connections dating back to the 6th Century BCE- the Avanti kingdom, through Ashoka’s era to the famous Raja Bhoja of the Parmara kings, to the Malwa Sultans of 14-15th century CE and Akbar’s Mughal empire to the Marathas of the 18th century, several ambitious regimes have left their imprint on this region.

Towns with historical importance dot the massive plateau, the blackish volcanic soil is irrigated by rivers like Narmada, Chambal and Betwa and many more in this place made lush green during monsoons.

And of all the many ruined cities of yore, the grandest is the fort city of Mandu, perched on an outcrop of the Vindhyas, sitting even higher than the Malwa plateau. A city which has been in existence since the 6th century BCE, Mandu is a shelter to numerous palaces, mosques, Jain temples and home to numerous ancient Afghan/Malwa Sultanate architectural marvels.
The sleepy-town still echoes the mesmerising beats of music & poetry describing the eternal romance of Rani Roopmati and Sultan Baz Bahadur; inasmuch that the tales of their legendary love are embedded in the monuments, the folklore, and even the menu of local restaurants.

Team DelhiByFoot/IndiaByFoot and Parwaz invites you to a journey to this ancient ruins of a fort city-Mandu during monsoons, a time when the natural beauty mixed with ruins of Mandu….makes it a heavenly experience!

An immersive experience of a lifetime, brought to you in our trademark DBF-style, replete with long-lost tales of yore, insightful architectural explorations of formidable monuments, photography opportunities galore, the music and culture of Malwa and of course lip-smacking culinary delights!

Apart from the monuments and getting drenched in their stories, we will also eat our way through exquisite street food @ Saraffa bazaar in Indore, enjoy the monsoon at its greenest and soak in some ‘Saawan’ songs of folk singers of Malwa and eventually end our journey at the banks of the mighty river Narmada, at the ghats of the erstwhile capital city of the Holkar Dynasty at Maheshwar and seeing the famous Maheswari saree weavers of M.P. work!

  3. Hi Guys, just came across your site… and realised that i’ve missed the walk for the 21st… can you let me know of future walks please… i just love history…

    1. Hi Ayushi,
Thanks for writing in with your concerns. We do not charge money for providing any travel mode to any participant.
First let me explain what happens in a typical walk event we organise. People meet at a given point and then guided by us they embark on a short walking tour experience of 2-3 hours which covers a small specific theme/monument/cultural aspect of our city of Delhi. During this walk we share the historical facts of the monuments, then we recount interesting anecdotes about the people, both present and past and share our learnings about the cultural aspects of the city. Contsantly our team update ourselves with interesting trivia, stories and to do all this regularly, safely while maintaining a certain level of quantity is the reason why the money charged is for. I now hope it is clear to you and we will wish to see you, very soon on our walks…
      Thanks
